Stay Calm — A Flat Tyre on the Motorway Is Manageable

A flat tyre on the motorway or a sudden blowout is one of the most stressful driving situations you can face. But with the right knowledge, you can handle it safely and get help fast. Here's exactly what to do.

Step 1: Don't Brake Sharply

If you feel a blowout or rapid deflation, resist the instinct to stamp on the brakes. Hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands, ease off the accelerator gradually, and allow the car to decelerate naturally while steering straight.

Step 2: Signal and Move to the Hard Shoulder

Check mirrors, signal left, and carefully move to the motorway hard shoulder or the nearest motorway services. Drive as far onto the hard shoulder as possible, ideally getting all four wheels off the carriageway.

Step 3: Turn On Hazard Lights

Immediately activate your hazard warning lights as you pull over and keep them on throughout.

Step 4: Get Out Safely — Away from Traffic

Exit the vehicle using the passenger side doors (not the driver's door, which opens towards live traffic). Guide all passengers over the barrier or up the embankment — away from the motorway. Do not stand behind the vehicle.

Step 5: Call for Help

Call us on 07904 221403 or your breakdown provider. Give your exact location — use the nearest orange SOS post number or the what3words app. Stay behind the barrier while you wait. Never attempt to change a tyre on the hard shoulder of a live motorway.

Step 6: Be Visible

If you have a warning triangle, place it at least 45 metres behind your vehicle (but never on a motorway — only on A-roads and smaller). Keep your hazard lights on until help arrives.

After the Motorway Incident

Once safely recovered, book a full tyre check and wheel inspection. Even if the tyre has been changed, a blowout at speed can cause wheel rim damage or tracking issues that need professional assessment.
