Tyre Safety Checks — What to Look For and How to Do It Yourself

Why Regular Tyre Checks Matter

Tyres are your vehicle's only contact with the road. Defective tyres are a factor in thousands of UK road accidents every year. A simple 5-minute check — done monthly and before long trips — can keep you legal, safe and save you from expensive breakdowns.

The 5-Point Tyre Safety Check

1. Tread Depth

Insert a 20p coin into the main tread groove. If the coin's outer band is visible, your tread is approaching the legal minimum of 1.6mm — replace soon. Safety experts recommend replacing at 3mm. For a quick check across the full width of the tyre, use a proper tread depth gauge (available for under £5).

2. Tyre Pressure

Check with a quality pressure gauge (not the free ones at forecourts — they're often inaccurate). Compare to the pressures listed in your driver's door jamb or handbook. Check cold — after 30+ minutes without driving.

3. Sidewall Condition

Run your eyes and hand along the outer sidewall. Look for: cracks, cuts, abrasions, bulges or blisters. Any bulge is a tyre failure risk — replace immediately. Hairline cracks suggest ageing rubber — consider replacement if over 5 years old.

4. Tread Wear Pattern

Check that wear is even across the full width of the tyre. Uneven wear indicates: misalignment (one-sided wear), incorrect pressure (centre or edge wear) or suspension issues (patchy wear). These problems need addressing beyond just the tyre.

5. Valve Condition

Check the valve stem is not cracked, perished or leaning at an angle. A faulty valve is a common cause of slow punctures. Valves are inexpensive — replace them whenever you fit new tyres.
