Summer vs Winter Tyres in the UK — Which Do You Actually Need?

Do UK Drivers Really Need Winter Tyres?

Unlike Germany, Austria and Scandinavia, the UK does not legally require winter tyres. But that doesn't mean they aren't worth considering — particularly if you drive in rural or highland areas, or if your commute takes you over exposed routes in winter months.

Summer Tyres

Standard summer tyres are designed for temperatures above 7°C. Their rubber compound is optimised for warm conditions, providing excellent grip, handling precision and low rolling resistance on dry and wet roads in spring through autumn.

Weakness: Below 7°C, the rubber stiffens significantly, reducing grip. In ice and snow, summer tyre performance drops dramatically.

Winter Tyres

Winter tyres use a softer rubber compound that stays flexible below 7°C, plus a deeper, more intricate tread pattern with sipes (tiny cuts) that grip snow and slush. In winter conditions, they can reduce braking distances by up to 8 metres compared to summer tyres at 50mph.

Weakness: In warm weather, winter tyres wear faster and have slightly higher rolling resistance — increasing fuel costs. Swapping seasonally also adds cost.

All-Season Tyres — The UK Compromise

For most UK drivers, all-season tyres (also called all-weather tyres) offer the best compromise. They're designed to perform adequately in both warm and cold conditions, carrying the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) rating for genuine winter capability.

Recommended all-season tyres for UK drivers:

  • Michelin CrossClimate 2 — top-rated across all weather conditions
  • Continental AllSeasonContact 2 — excellent wet grip year-round
  • Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 — strong in snow and dry summer driving

Our Recommendation for UK Drivers

For most UK drivers in towns and cities: all-season tyres offer peace of mind without the hassle of seasonal swaps. For drivers in Scotland, the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales or Welsh hills: a proper winter tyre swap is worth serious consideration.
