Run-Flat Tyres — Pros, Cons and Everything UK Drivers Need to Know
Many new cars come with run-flat tyres. Are they worth keeping? Can they be repaired? We answer all the key questions.
What Are Run-Flat Tyres?
Run-flat tyres (RFT) have reinforced sidewalls that allow the vehicle to continue being driven at reduced speed (typically up to 50mph) for a limited distance (typically 50 miles) after a puncture or complete pressure loss. They are standard fitment on many BMW, Mini, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus models.
Pros of Run-Flat Tyres
- No need to change a tyre roadside — you can drive safely to a garage or home
- No spare tyre needed — frees up boot space and reduces vehicle weight
- Improved handling in a puncture — the reinforced sidewall prevents sudden collapse
- Reduced risk of blowout-related accidents
Cons of Run-Flat Tyres
- Harsher ride quality — the stiffer sidewall transmits more road imperfections into the cabin
- Higher cost — typically 50–100% more expensive than equivalent standard tyres
- Cannot usually be repaired — once driven on in run-flat mode, the internal structure is compromised and most manufacturers require replacement
- Reduced availability — not all sizes are widely stocked, especially for older or unusual rim diameters
- Requires TPMS — without a tyre pressure monitoring system, you may not notice a puncture until you've exceeded the run-flat limit
Can Run-Flat Tyres Be Repaired?
This depends on whether the tyre has been driven on in run-flat mode. If you detected the puncture immediately and did not drive more than a few miles on low pressure, some manufacturers allow repair — but you need a specialist assessment. Most run-flat tyres driven any significant distance on a puncture should be replaced.
Should You Switch From Run-Flat to Standard Tyres?
Many drivers choose to switch to standard tyres for improved ride comfort and lower replacement costs. If you do, ensure your car has a spare tyre, spacesaver or portable inflator available. Our technicians can advise on the best switch options for your vehicle model.
