Puncture Repair vs Tyre Replacement — What You Need to Know
Can your punctured tyre be repaired, or does it need replacing? Here's the definitive guide to making the right call.
Can My Punctured Tyre Be Repaired?
Not every puncture means you need a new tyre — and not every puncture can be safely repaired. Understanding the rules helps you avoid unnecessary expense and stay safe. Here's the definitive guide.
When a Puncture CAN Be Repaired
According to British Standard BS AU 159, a tyre puncture can be repaired if:
- The puncture is in the central 75% of the tread (not the shoulder or sidewall)
- The hole is no larger than 6mm in diameter
- There is no secondary damage to the tyre structure
- The tyre was not driven on while flat (which causes internal damage)
- The tread depth is above 2mm at the time of repair
If all conditions are met, a proper two-piece repair (plug and patch from inside) is a safe and legal solution.
When a Puncture CANNOT Be Repaired
- Sidewall damage — cannot be safely repaired under any circumstances
- Shoulder punctures — too close to the flex zone, structurally unsafe
- Multiple punctures — weakens the overall structure
- Driven flat — heat builds up and destroys the inner liner and carcass
- Run-flat tyres — most cannot be repaired once used in run-flat mode
- Large holes or tears — over 6mm diameter
Beware of Temporary Fixes
Tyre foam sealants and portable inflators are temporary emergency measures only — not permanent repairs. They can contaminate the inside of the tyre and make proper repair impossible. Tell your technician if foam sealant has been used.
Cost Comparison
A professional puncture repair typically costs £20–£30. A new tyre starts from around £50 fitted for a budget option, up to £200+ for premium. Our technicians always assess whether repair is safe before recommending replacement.
