The Legal Tyre Tread Depth in the UK

UK law requires a minimum tyre tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Driving below this is illegal and can result in a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per tyre. But tyre safety experts recommend replacing tyres at 3mm — well before you reach the legal limit.

7 Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing

1. Tread Depth Below 3mm

Use a 20p coin — if the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted into the tread groove, your tyre is approaching the legal minimum and should be replaced soon.

2. Tread Wear Indicator Bars Visible

Modern tyres have built-in tread wear indicators moulded into the grooves. When the tread is level with these bars, the tyre is at the legal minimum and must be changed immediately.

3. Cracks or Bulges in the Sidewall

Sidewall cracks indicate the rubber is degrading. Bulges or blisters are extremely dangerous as they signal internal structural failure — a blowout risk at speed. Replace immediately.

4. Vibration or Pulling to One Side

Vibration through the steering wheel or the car pulling left/right while driving straight could indicate uneven tyre wear, wheel imbalance or alignment issues — all of which require urgent attention.

5. Frequent Pressure Loss

If you're constantly having to inflate a tyre, it likely has a slow puncture, a faulty valve, or porous rubber. A mobile tyre technician can diagnose and fix this quickly.

6. Age Over 5 Years

Even if tyres look fine visually, rubber degrades over time. Tyres over 5 years old should be inspected by a professional; those over 10 years should be replaced regardless of appearance.

7. Uneven Wear Pattern

Wear concentrated on the edges (underinflation), centre (overinflation), or just one side (alignment issue) means the tyre is being used incorrectly and will fail prematurely.
